FIN STUDIO PICTURES at the Cannes Film Festival

The curtains have closed on the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and the winners are celebrating their triumphs. Let’s take a look back at the key highlights and takeaways from this year’s prestigious event.

Highlights from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival

Political Calm and Quiet Revelations

The anticipation leading up to Cannes 2024 was rife with potential strikes and #MeToo allegations set to shake the French film industry. Surprisingly, the event unfolded without significant disruption. Festival workers, integral to the event's success, carried out their duties seamlessly, and the anticipated #MeToo revelations did not materialise. However, Coralie Fargeat, in her acceptance speech for Best Screenplay for "The Substance," reminded everyone that change is a gradual process, built brick by brick.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza saw subtle nods, with some celebrities incorporating symbolic gestures into their attire, but overt political statements were minimal. Festival director Thierry Frémaux seemed to have succeeded in his goal of maintaining a scandal-free festival.

A Worthy Palme d'Or Winner

The festival concluded on a high note with Sean Baker’s "Anora" winning the Palme d’Or. This fast-paced, humorous, and moving film made Baker the first American director to win since Terrence Malick in 2011. Dedicated to sex workers, the film underscored Baker’s ongoing focus on marginalised communities. While some believed Mohammad Rasoulof’s "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" deserved the top prize for its politically charged narrative, Baker's win was celebrated for its cinematic brilliance.

"Emilia Pérez" Takes Double Honours

Jacques Audiard’s "Emilia Pérez" emerged as a standout, winning both the Best Actress (Ensemble) award and the Jury Prize. The film, a Mexico-set gangster trans musical, was praised for its joy and innovation. The ensemble award celebrated the film’s portrayal of sisterhood, with Karla Sofía Gascón making history as the first trans performer to win at Cannes.

NEON’s Unstoppable Run

Indie distributor NEON continued its winning streak, acquiring rights to "Anora" and securing its fifth consecutive Palme d’Or. NEON's knack for picking winners has solidified its reputation in the industry, leaving competitors envious.

Controversial Spotlight on Trump

Ali Abbasi’s "The Apprentice," chronicling Donald Trump’s rise, sparked controversy with scenes depicting Trump in an unflattering light. The film, not intended as a hit job, nonetheless provoked legal threats from Trump’s camp, highlighting the polarised reactions to its content.

Editing Could Have Enhanced Many Films

Many of this year’s films, such as "Furiosa" and "The Substance," could have benefited from tighter editing. The consensus was that a bit of trimming could have elevated the overall impact, proving that tight narratives can indeed be more.

Mixed Results for Cinema Titans

Veteran directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner presented new works, but not all lived up to their past successes. While their presence is vital for Cannes’ prestige, some argued that more slots should be allocated to emerging and female filmmakers.

A Year of Nudity and Intimacy

This year’s films, including "Kinds of Kindness," "The Balconettes," "Wild Diamond," and "Anora," featured significant nudity, contributing to one of the most sexually charged editions in recent memory. These depictions, however, were integral to the narratives, exploring themes of ageing, sex work, and beauty culture.

Yórgos Lánthimos Continues His Winning Streak

Yórgos Lánthimos added another accolade to his collection with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for "Kinds of Kindness." Lánthimos’ consistent success at Cannes and other festivals underscores his enduring appeal and mastery of the craft.

Memorable Soundtracks

This year’s competition films featured exceptional soundtracks, with standout moments like Bobby Darin’s "Beyond The Sea" in Miguel Gomes’ "Grand Tour." The festival's music selections added depth and emotion to the cinematic experience.

Improved Ticketing System

Cannes 2024 saw a much-improved ticketing system after last year's debacle. The new online booking process allowed attendees to secure spots in screenings smoothly, demonstrating that feedback was taken seriously and acted upon.

In summary, Cannes 2024 was marked by cinematic excellence, political restraint, and a celebration of both new and veteran talent.

See you next year!
