Innovations in computer graphics have consistently improved workflows, increasing speed, automating repetitive tasks, and enabling real-time processing of larger datasets.
But until now, these advancements have mostly enhanced efficiency without threatening the fabric of the workforce, often creating new roles to support the innovations.
However, a recent leap in facial animation technology may signal a shift in this dynamic, with AI entering the scene as a potential disruptor.

The early days of performance capture involved actors donning awkward rigs – their faces covered with dots and their movements tracked by selfie-like head-mounted cameras. This cloud-based software takes a static image and a reference video, animating the still image with facial movements from the video. In essence, it bypasses traditional rigging and motion capture processes, delivering results that are astonishing for an early iteration of the technology.

We ran our own test here at Fin Studio Pictures to see the tool in action. The results? While not perfect, they are undeniably impressive for what amounts to a fraction of the time and effort traditional methods require. A process that would typically involve a team of 4-5 people over several days was completed in just 25 minutes, from generating the still image to recording and mapping the speech reference.
Implications for VFX and Beyond
